They are called also doughnuts and may be placed between teeth to push them apart so that orthodontic bands may be placed, in cases where teeth are aligned very tightly. The separators will be removed just before placement of the bands. Doughnuts do not mix well with sticky foods, toothpicks, interdental brushes or floss.
